My heartiest congratulations and heartfelt to the Team of Federal Hotels International and The Federal Kuala Lumpur, and my dear cousion, Y.T.M Dato' Hajah Tunku Mukminah Mohd Jiwa, for their commitment, dedication and tireless effort to successfully compile this coffee table book entitled Favourite Dishes from the Tunku's Kitchen's - a collection of our family recipes and my beloved late father's favourite dishes. The dishes that my father loved ranged from simple home-cooked food prepared in our traditional way to diverse culinary delights prepared internationally.
I still remember, Tunku, my father, learned to cook as a student in England . Tunku learned to appreciate Western food, and his favourite English foods were roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, which he had at lease once a week, and always during our family get-togethers. I was often relegated the task of stirring the batter for the Yorkshire pudding whilst my father checked to make sure it was the correct consistency. As for the beef, my father preferred medium rare, Therefore, Tunku always cooked it half-done, and when the beef was sliced, I would take the well-done parts whilst Tunku had the reddish centre. My father also loved mushroom soup, spaghetti, English truffle. Chinese steamboat and local favourites like ayam golek, udang goreang asam, sayur bayam keledek, as well as Thai food like more knob and Siamese red curry. My grandmother was from Thailand , so naturally Tunku appreciated the spiciness of Thai cuisine.
Tunku took charge of the kitchen in the evening, only whenever he could. Breakfast for my father was just a simple affair as Tunku was always contented with just nasi lemak, roti or cereal with his cup of special blended tea. Tunku would mix Boh and Lipton to create that special strong tea he loved.
I hope u will have such as much fun reading this cookbook as I have. It provides a tantalising insight into the unique and exotic culinary styles of some of Malaysia 's perennial favourite home-cooked food in addition to some of Tunku's Western delights. I dedicate this every unique gift to my dearest late father, Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, for his love, contributions and achievements to both our nation and our family.

Bapa Malaysia, the Father of Independence Is Malaysia's beloved first Prime Minister. The late YTM. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj was at revered leader known for his significant contributions to the country.
Born on 8 February 1903, his royal childhood was in Kedah. At ten, he studied at the Debsurin School in Bangkok but had to return to join a Malay school in Kedah due to the death of his eldest brother. Thereafter, he studied at the Penang Free School in Penang. At the age of 17 and with a Kedah government scholarship, he left for England to study at St. Catherine's College at Cambridge University, England. |
The Tunku made many sacrifices and his immense contributions to the country to bring Malaysia from colonialism to independence was a great and noble feat. He became the first Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya from 1957 to 1963, and of Malaysia from 1963 to 1970.
Turku was made chairman of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) upon his return from England after having finally and successfully completed his Bar at the Inner Temple in England in December 1948. On 25 August 1951, he became the UMNO president succeeding Dato' Onn Jaafar. His leadership saw the formation of the Alliance Party and won the country's first general election in July 1955. The Alliance consists of UMNO (United Malays National Organization), the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) and the Malayan Indian Congress (MIC).
The communists surrendered in 1955 and five years later, Malayan efforts succeeded in ending the Emergency caused by them. Then efforts were concertedly rallied to free the country from being ruled by the British. He travelled all over the country, met people from all walks of life, promoted unity and overcame the country's political problems to make the various ethnic groups cooperate to give birth to the Alliance Party.
Tunku was appointed then as Chief Minister and Minister of Home Affairs. Under his leadership in 1956, he led a mission to discuss with the British government the independence for Malaya. The meeting saw the signing of the Independent Treaty at Lancaster House in London on 8 February 1956 and subsequently, Malaya got its independence on 31 August 1957.
At midnight on 30 August 1957, the Malayan flag was hoisted to take the place of the Union Jack at the Selangor Club Padang. On 31 August morning, Tunku read the Proclamation of Independence with shouts of 'Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!' at the Merdeka Stadium. It was a joyous occasion with the same echos by thousands who were there and millions of listeners who followed the proceedings through the radio. The future of Malaya and the beginnings to ensure peace, prosperity and harmony amongst the races was in the making.
More victories were in store for the Turku, who was elected as the first Prime Minister of Malaya, led the Alliance to win general elections in 1959, 1964 and 1969. In May 1961, Tunku proposed a Malaysian Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, North Borneo (later called Sabah), and Brunei. All joined the Federation in 1963 with the exception of Brunei. However, Singapore withdrew from Malaysia due to economic and political disputes that saw its exit from the Federation in 1965.
Tunku Abdul Rahman, 'The Prince' from Kedah with common touch, an astute and dedicated politician, he had be far gained respect and love, and will be remembered by he fellow countrymen and peers. Although unpopular with some British officials for his frankness and reforms, he was adamant in his quest to improve the living standards of the locals.
He relinquished his position as the first Prime Minister of Malaysia after May 1969. He was a prolific writer an contributed many books, newspaper columns and occasion speeches. Tunku also received numerous honours, awards an honorary degrees from various States, Federal and foreign governments, universities and charity organizations.
Tunku was compelled to write and although it was not financial gain to him?coupled with the fact that his book were pirated?in his own words, he said, "Nevertheless, feel duty bound to write for the sake of posterity and I will continue to do so".
Tunku passed away in 1990 at the age of 87.
This publication commemorates Malaysia's 48th birthday.
